What is Vacation Bible School?

For those who aren’t that familiar with Vacation Bible School (VBS), you may be wondering what it is. So, let us introduce it to you!

VBS is a fun-filled program many churches offer in the summer months that gives children the chance to connect with the Bible. It’s a popular summer activity for Christians and non-Christians alike and is available for kids in Pre-K through 6th Grade. Some programs even extend to those in high school.

Vacation Bible School can run for a week or a few days, and each program has its own theme that children can explore. Some of these themes can include sailing, science, the Old West, etc. No matter the theme, there is always a connection between it and God, allowing kids to discover God in a creative way. A typical day will include Bible stories, arts and crafts, games, snack breaks, songs, team lessons, and prayer.

Is VBS Worth it?

Some may wonder if Vacation Bible School is worth it, or if it is still relevant. And the simple answer to both is: yes.

VBS is absolutely still relevant and is a popular summer program in churches across the US. Not to mention, VBS is often a milestone in a child’s faith development. Whether it’s learning about God for the first time or getting to dig a little more into their faith, this is a worthwhile program. “We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation the glorious deeds of the Lord” (Psalm 78:4).

How VBS Benefits Children

We know VBS is worthwhile, but how? Here are just some ways VBS benefits children!

Grows Their Faith

While Vacation Bible School is a fun summer camp, it’s actually doing some important things. It allows children to encounter stories from the Bible and learn about Jesus. This helps in laying the foundation for a lifelong relationship with God, something that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. VBS also provides a safe space to explore their beliefs and develop a sense of identity within their faith. These are some of the biggest benefits gained from attending a VBS program!

Fosters Community

Of course, learning about God and His amazing love and growing in faith aren’t just the only benefits. VBS is a great way to foster community. The program is an easy way to get kids involved in church while giving you the opportunity to meet people within the church, too.

Your child will meet new friends who share their beliefs and will learn life lessons on how to be good friends with others. You can make new friends too, or be a helping hand to those families who are attending the program but don’t normally come to church.

Encourages Outside Time

In a time where technology is becoming a big part of our lives, getting kids outside to play, get some fresh air, and be active is becoming increasingly vital. Especially during the summer months while they’re taking a break from school!

The perfect solution: VBS. Thanks to the wonderful volunteers, your child will be kept entertained. Through fun games, skits, sports activities, and other character-building activities, your child will have a blast getting out and being active. This also gives you the chance to finish those errands!

Creates Lasting Memories

One of the best benefits, though? VBS will create lasting memories for your child. Vacation Bible School is a special event that helps lock Bible truths in their hearts and minds and creates memories that they’ll look back on fondly for a lifetime.

Finding a Vacation Bible School

During the summer, many churches run their own Vacation Bible School programs (we do at Christ Lutheran Church!). If you’re not in our area and your own church isn’t holding VBS, someone in your church may be able to provide a list of other churches in your area that are. You can also check newspapers, local magazines, message boards, and online. VBS dates, registration info, and more can typically be found through these resources as well.
