Not heading out for Sunday service because you don’t see the benefits or sleeping in seems like a better idea? No matter your current reason for not attending, here are the top reasons why you should be going to church.

To Grow Your Faith

Going to church can be the best tool to help you grow both personally and spiritually. This is because you are surrounding yourself with people who will uplift you and challenge you, allowing you to grow deeper in your faith. We grow more spiritually when we gather with others than we can by ourselves. Gathering regularly with other believers becomes a refining process where we help each other, pray for each other, and encourage each other to want to follow Christ more wholeheartedly. Even if it’s your first time walking through the church door, you set yourself up for growing your faith.

To Build Strong Relationships

We weren’t designed to do life alone. That’s why attending church is so great – because you can build strong relationships with like-minded people.

If you’re new in town and want to meet some new people, church provides an opportunity to surround yourself with others. In this community, you’ll be provided with a sense of belonging and purpose that can be difficult to find anywhere else. If you’re looking to build a relationship with a mentor, church can be the perfect place to facilitate that relationship. You’ll find people who have walked the road ahead of you that are happy to share their wisdom and insights to teach you from their mistakes. Going to church can also strengthen your marriage, as attending service regularly helps couples remember their shared values and teaches mutual love and respect for each other.

To Find Help and Encouragement in Times of Need

When you’re going through hard times, it can be difficult to not only trust God but attend church. It is easier to curl up into a ball and stay in bed than pretend like everything is okay.

But when life gets hard, we need to turn towards God and go to church. Why? Because He’s got us. “Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” Isaiah 41:10. He will never let us down (as He’s shown us many times in the Bible), and going to church can help you see that first hand.

You will find His love and strength at church service through those who are attending. The church community can provide incredible encouragement and comfort during difficult times and can be an invaluable source of help and strength. All you need to do is trust Him, put one foot in front of the other, and head out for church service.

To Learn to Forgive

Another reason to go to church? To learn to forgive.

While we may have learned about forgiveness in primary school, it can still be hard to practice it, even as an adult. But holding onto anger, hurt, and bitterness can do more harm to us than good. Going to church helps you learn to forgive because you’ll hear about and recognize Jesus’ forgiveness for our sins. And the more you recognize, the more you’ll be able to forgive others.

To Teach Your Kids to Love the Church

If you want to teach your kids to love God, they need to see that you love God. It’s not enough to take your kids and drop them off at church in hopes they’ll figure it out themselves.

Our children will learn more about faith from watching us live out our own faith journey than from us telling them about God. So, we need to show up and head to church service on Sundays! Attending together can be an incredibly valuable investment in their future. It will equip them with the spiritual tools they need to become mature, responsible adults.

To Change Your Idea of Church

If you’ve stopped going to church (or haven’t ever attended) because you think church is a bunch of boring, old-fashioned people who are judgmental, you should attend a service. Why? Because those are negative stereotypes that just aren’t true anymore. More often than not, churches these days are full of people of all ages, young and old, alive with the spirit of God and with worship that is current and kind. If you’re not going because you think nothing has changed – attend one service and see for yourself how things have changed.
